Apple recently announced developer access to the iphone OS 3.0 SDK.
Among the highlights:

End Users:

1. Cut, Copy and Paste. Shake to undo; across all native and 3rd party apps.
2. MMS support (iphone 3G only)
3. Global search
4. Landscape mode for all apps
5. A2DP (aka, Stereo Bluetooth)
6. Multiplayer gaming over bluetooth
7. Background notifications (ie, if you close the chat app, you can
still get messages)
8. Voice recording app

Developers:

1. Access to maps
2. Landscape API
3. OTA purchases within apps
4. Shake, Proximity and iTunes API access
