If you want to configure stuff before installing it, just install from
source; which you can do with any distribution.

If you like to have a packaging system that allows you to configure
things at install time; try any ports-based system (like well, FreeBSD
or Gentoo's portage).

I am just scratching the surface right now and Mandriva, Fedora and Ubuntu seem like the better distributions when it comes to transitioning from windows. I hope to eventually master programming which all depends on how well I am able to adapt and pick up stuff.

I too prefer the more direct hands on approach, though a lot of linux users recommend learning first and planning the entire linux experience. I hope to make it an interesting mix of both. Will try and document the outcomes as much as I can.

There doesn't seem to be a sound driver for my HP dx7400 microtower which is shipped with a Realtek Ac '97 High definition sound card. Apart from this, I have done some minor stuff like linking java plugins in firefox and tranferring files using scp to my router (smoothwall, linux based).
