Your sound card is supported on Linux and the drivers are available
with the latest kernel. My Asus motherboard has them and they're
working fine.
I moved from Windows to Linux 6 years ago, and moved from Windows ME
to Slackware Linux. I had a second machine to access the Internet when
I screwed up my Linux box ... used it for about a month until I got
the hands on properly.
Slackware is the best way to truly toy with Linux, as every program or
service requires you to configure it before using it, which means lots
of manual reading! Amazing!
Stay away from Fedora.

I am just scratching the surface right now and Mandriva, Fedora and Ubuntu seem like the better distributions when it comes to transitioning from windows. I hope to eventually master programming which all depends on how well I am able to adapt and pick up stuff.

I too prefer the more direct hands on approach, though a lot of linux users recommend learning first and planning the entire linux experience. I hope to make it an interesting mix of both. Will try and document the outcomes as much as I can.

There doesn't seem to be a sound driver for my HP dx7400 microtower which is shipped with a Realtek Ac '97 High definition sound card. Apart from this, I have done some minor stuff like linking java plugins in firefox and tranferring files using scp to my router (smoothwall, linux based).
