Thanks Burhan for your very insightful email. I am just scratching the surface right now and Mandriva, Fedora and Ubuntu seem like the better distributions when it comes to transitioning from windows. I hope to eventually master programming which all depends on how well I am able to adapt and pick up stuff.

I do agree that books are a little more on the boring side. I too prefer the more direct hands on approach, though a lot of linux users recommend learning first and planning the entire linux experience. I hope to make it an interesting mix of both. Will try and document the outcomes as much as I can.

I have already installed Mandriva and it is pretty much Windows with a few challenges here and there. The only major problem I am facing is the sound card which doesn't seem to be working. There doesn't seem to be a sound driver for my HP dx7400 microtower which is shipped with a Realtek Ac '97 High definition sound card. Apart from this, I have done some minor stuff like linking java plugins in firefox and tranferring files using scp to my router (smoothwall, linux based).

I think I may just go with the Gentoo stage 1 idea. It will be a lot of hard work I can imagine but it should pay off. Also, I will wait for Fedora 9 to be released to install it perhaps over the Mandriva distribution.

Thanks again for your email. I really appreciate all the information you've provided. I will keep you posted as to how I am progressing.
